14 things every Devon Rex owner should have at home

Devon Rexes are cats of exceptional energy, intelligence and sociability, which is why they need accessories that will let them use up this energy and provide them with comfort.

Here is a list of fourteen things worth having to provide your Devon with everything it needs.

1. A scratching post with various levels

Devon Rexes love to climb and jump, which is why a scratching post with shelves, a tunnel and a place to scratch is a must-have. It will let them satisfy their natural scratching instinct, and also create a place for play and observation.

Tip: Choose a scratching post with different levels and textures, so that the cat has many opportunities for play. It is important that at least one scratching post in the home is tall, so that the cat can fully stretch out on it while standing with its paws on the floor and reaching high with its front ones.

2. Interactive toys

Devon Rexes are intelligent cats that need mental stimulation. Interactive toys, such as treat balls, springs, laser pointers (here beware of the „reward” element) or feathers on a string, will help the cat use up its energy and keep it engaged in play.

Tip: Change the toys from time to time so the cat doesn't get bored with them.

3. A bed or blanket for the radiator

Devon Rexes love warmth and soft surfaces, which is why a bed or a special blanket that can be hung on a radiator will be an ideal place for them to rest.

Tip: Choose a material that is easy to wash and that will be pleasant for the cat.

4. A play tunnel

A play tunnel is a great option for active Devon Rexes. Cats love to hide and dart through such spaces, which provides them with both play and the possibility of exploration.

Tip: The tunnel can be varied by adding small toys inside or by buying one that will have various openings or the possibility of attaching more.

5. A covered-type litter box

Devon Rexes are cats that like privacy, which is why a covered litter box will give them a sense of comfort. A covered litter box also minimises the spread of unpleasant odours. Although there are also cats that do not like covered litter boxes – keep an eye on this or ask the breeder.

Tip: Regularly clean the litter box and check whether it does not need its odour filter replaced.

6. A water bowl with a fountain

A water fountain encourages cats to drink, and Devon Rexes, like many cats, often prefer flowing water. The water in the fountain is fresher, and the cats have easier access to it.

Tip: Regularly change the water and clean the fountain, to avoid deposits and bacteria.

7. A claw care set

Although Devon Rexes usually take care of their claws themselves, regularly trimming them will help prevent scratches on furniture and reduce the risk of injuries to the cat.

Tip: Trim the claws every few weeks, using special clippers for cats.

8. A cabinet or box for toys

Cats quickly get used to their toys, but it is good to have a selection of them and to refresh something from time to time. A toy box makes organisation easier, and gives the cat an opportunity to explore various objects.

Tip: Once a week change the set of available toys, to stimulate the cat and encourage it to play.

9. A soft brush or a massage glove

Although Devon Rexes have short fur that does not require intensive grooming, cats often like gentle combing or massaging, which also strengthens the bond between the cat and the carer.

Tip: Choose a gentle brush or glove and every so often give the cat a massage, especially if it likes close contact.

10. A good quality carrier

Devon Rexes are cats that during travel can be curious and energetic, so the carrier should be safe and comfortable. A good-quality carrier will be useful both during visits to the vet and during travel.

Tip: Get the cat used to the carrier by sometimes leaving it open at home and placing a favourite blanket inside.

11. A duvet or blanket for the bed

Devon Rexes love warmth, which is why a soft duvet or blanket will provide them with extra comfort. It is also a great solution for cats that like to burrow or make themselves little hideouts.

Tip: Choose a material that is easy to wash, because Devon Rexes love to rest in clean and soft places.

12. A high shelf or a vantage point

Devon Rexes like to observe the world from above, which is why a high shelf or a viewing spot by the window is an ideal way to provide them with visual stimulation and observation.

Tip: Create a „cat observation point” by the window, which will let the cat look outside. It is a way to have entertainment and relaxation at the same time.

13. A cat shelter or house

Cats sometimes need a moment of solitude, which is why a small shelter or house where the Devon Rex can tuck itself away can give it a sense of security and comfort.

Tip: Place the house in a quiet corner, away from loud sounds. You can also put a soft little blanket or a toy inside.

14. A heated bed

Devon Rexes are cats that often seek warm places, and a heated bed will provide them with comfort on cooler days. It is an excellent solution, especially for cats that like to fall asleep in the warmth.

Tip: If a heated bed is electric, always choose products with safety features, so that they are fully safe for the cat.

In summary…

These practical accessories will make life easier both for you and for your Devon Rex. Thanks to them your cat will have not only comfort and entertainment, but also the possibility of fulfilling its natural needs.
