{"id":927,"date":"2023-12-28T00:06:50","date_gmt":"2023-12-28T00:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/?page_id=927"},"modified":"2025-10-31T16:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T15:25:56","slug":"kolory","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/en\/devonrex\/kolory\/","title":{"rendered":"Devon Rex cat colors (what the EMS code is)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Devon Rex cats come <strong>in a great many color variants<\/strong> and everyone will surely find a kitten in their favorite color. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To <strong>to make it easier to determine cats' colors<\/strong> (both breeders and buyers), people started to use <strong>the EMS system<\/strong> (Easy Mind System).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would like to explain what the deal is with colours (and these EMS codes). And we have two options for this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For beginners<\/strong> &#8211; so as to know what the colours of Devons are and what the letters\/digits mean<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>For advanced users<\/strong> &#8211; if you want to understand exactly what and how EMS describes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Devon colors for BEGINNERS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First we will try to explain the EMS code <strong>for laypeople and in the simplest possible language<\/strong> (so we apologise to the specialists for certain simplifications, and invite you to the advanced part further on the page).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EMS code starts with a 3-letter abbreviation assigned to a given breed. <strong>For Devons this will be DRX<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next after DRX you will see letters OR letters and digits (single or several groups). They specify very precisely <strong>the cat's color<\/strong> in many respects (colour as such, but also patterns, shades, but also eyes, etc.). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately you will see the EMS code both <strong>on the pedigrees<\/strong> as well as in the descriptions of our cats on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-1024x323.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-1024x323.png 1024w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-300x95.png 300w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-768x242.png 768w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-1536x484.png 1536w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-2048x646.png 2048w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-6-600x189.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Basic color variants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In very simple terms, you can find Devons in several main color varieties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solids <\/strong>&#8211; the cat has only <strong>one color<\/strong> the whole body (solid)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Points <\/strong>&#8211; the cat is &#8222;white\/light&#8221;, but has <strong>color on the ears, muzzle, paws, and tail<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Patched <\/strong>&#8211; the cat has some main color + has <strong>white spots<\/strong>\/patches\/color in various places<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tabbies <\/strong>&#8211; the cat has some main color + <strong>has stripes<\/strong> (like a tiger\/leopard)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tortoiseshells <\/strong>&#8211; the cat has some main color + additionally the color red  <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the main varieties, but of course there can be cats that are a mix of them. Plus there are a few details which, for simplicity, we will not discuss in this part (e.g. shading of the hair).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now below <strong>we will describe each variety<\/strong> and we will show on drawings what it looks like + we will give examples of cats from our cattery in a given colour variety (the links will take you to a given cat's page, where you can see more of its photos).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Solid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solid cats have a uniform color over the whole body. They can be in <strong>9 base colors<\/strong>, which have the following <strong>letter designations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>black <\/strong>(n) and lighter <strong>blue <\/strong>(a)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>chocolate <\/strong>(b) and lighter <strong>lilac <\/strong>(c)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cinnamon <\/strong>(o) and lighter <strong>fawn <\/strong>(p)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>red <\/strong>(d) and lighter <strong>cream <\/strong>(e)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>white<\/strong> (w)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-1024x341.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-1024x341.png 1024w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-768x256.png 768w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-1536x511.png 1536w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-2048x682.png 2048w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-3-600x200.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: Laypeople often describe a cat's colour as they see it &#8211; that's why a cat that is officially blue is in fact sometimes called and described as \u201egrey\u201d. Chocolate looks like \u201edark brown\u201d, and cinnamon like \u201elight brown\u201d, lilac is a bit \u201ecream \/ light grey\u201d, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: The cat <strong>white <\/strong>(unlike a point or a bicolour cat, which we'll get to in a moment) is a cat that has no other colour on its body (it's either an albino or a cat without colour &#8211; which, interestingly, can have coloured offspring). If any other colour appears on its body, then it's no longer a white cat (in that case see point and bicolour cats).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example<\/strong>: Our solid cats are e.g. <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/atena\/\">Atena<\/a> (<strong>DRX b<\/strong> &#8211; chocolate), <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/amber\/\">Amber<\/a> (<strong>DRX a<\/strong> &#8211; blue), <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/giga\/\">Giga<\/a> (<strong>DRX c<\/strong> &#8211; lilac).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Point<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Point cats <strong>look like white\/light<\/strong>, but have one of the above solid colours in 4 specific and very characteristic places &#8211; <strong>on the paws, muzzle, ears and tail<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In pointed cats there are <strong>3 varieties<\/strong> depending on the contrast (between the white and those places with colour), and they have <strong>numeric designations<\/strong> starting with the digit 3:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Siamese <\/strong>(33) \u2013 maximum contrast (an almost white\/light cat with colours in these 4 places)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tonkinese <\/strong>(32) \u2013 medium contrast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Burmese <\/strong>(31) \u2013 the lowest contrast (almost like a solid)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-1024x530.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-1024x530.png 1024w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-768x398.png 768w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-1536x796.png 1536w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-2048x1061.png 2048w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-7-600x311.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EMS code of a point cat consists of the base colour (a letter) and these two digits with a 3 in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example<\/strong>: Our pointed cats are e.g. <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/faraday\/\">Faraday<\/a> (<strong>DRX o 33<\/strong> &#8211; cinnamon Siamese point), <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/h-wenus\/\">H-Wenus<\/a> (<strong>DRX a 33<\/strong> &#8211; blue Siamese point), or <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/bajka\/\">Bajka<\/a> (<strong>DRX c 33<\/strong> &#8211; lilac Siamese point). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Patched<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A &#8222;patched&#8221; cat <strong>has some main colour<\/strong>, but also has <strong>an addition of white color<\/strong> (spots\/patches or a large part of the body). Depending on <strong>amount <\/strong>of this white colour it has its 4 possible designations with a 0 in front:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>van <\/strong>(01) &#8211; white is &gt;95% (colour only in the area of the ears and on the tail)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>harlequin <\/strong>(02) &#8211; white is &gt; 80% (like van + additional patches on the body and legs)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>bicolor<\/strong> (03) &#8211; white makes up about 50% of the body <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&#8222;with white&#8221;<\/strong> (09) &#8211; the white is &lt; 40% (these may also be tiny spots)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4-1024x213.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4-1024x213.png 1024w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4-300x62.png 300w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4-768x159.png 768w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4-1536x319.png 1536w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4-600x125.png 600w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-4.png 1744w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note<\/strong>: In Devons only these 4 designations of \u201epatching\u201d are possible (and probably the most numerous are those 09 \u201ewith an unspecified amount of white\u201d), but in other breeds there are more of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EMS code of a \u201epatched\u201d cat consists of the base colour (a letter) and these two digits with a 0 in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example<\/strong>: Our <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/diament\/\">Diament<\/a> is <strong>DRX c 09<\/strong> (lilac with white), <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/chmurka\/\">Chmurka<\/a> is <strong>DRX a 09<\/strong> (blue with white), <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/cookie\/\">Cookie<\/a> is <strong>DRX a 09<\/strong> (blue with white).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fun fact:<\/strong> Can you see the difference between a white cat (w), a point cat (3x) and a patched cat (0x)? A white one (w) must be <strong>entirely white<\/strong>. A point (especially Siamese 33) may \u201eseem\u201d white, but it has those <strong>distinct colors in specific places<\/strong> (paws, muzzle, ears, tail). A patched cat, (especially van 01) may seem like a white cat or a point, but pay attention <strong>where it has this white and where it does not<\/strong>. And to make it even more interesting, take a look at our <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/einstein\/\">Einstein<\/a>, which is at the same time a point cat and a \u201epatched\u201d one (it has the code <strong>DRX n 09 33<\/strong>) &#8211; how can you tell? He could not be a \u201epure\u201d point, because he had white paws (i.e. white in the place where points have a specific solid colour).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Tabby<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cats can have, besides the base color, also <strong>a pattern \/ design on the coat<\/strong> in the form of stripes, spots or other patterns. It then looks e.g. like the fur of a leopard or a tiger. Depending on the type of pattern, 5 options are possible, which are designated with a digit starting from 2:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>classic <\/strong>(22) &#8211; the pattern forms closed circles, resembling butterfly wings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>mackerel <\/strong>(23) &#8211; parallel stripes \u2013 like on a tiger's fur<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>spotted <\/strong>(24) &#8211; the pattern forms spots\/dots \u2013 like a leopard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ticked\/Abyssinian <\/strong>(25) &#8211; broken up, no visible striping\/patterns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>undetermined<\/strong> (21) &#8211; when none of the 4 patterns above fits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2-1024x217.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2-1024x217.png 1024w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2-300x64.png 300w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2-768x163.png 768w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2-1536x325.png 1536w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2-600x127.png 600w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-2.png 1746w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EMS code of a tabby cat consists of the base colour (a letter) and these two digits with a 2 in front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example<\/strong>: We have not yet had a tabby kitten in our cattery \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Tortoiseshells<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tortoiseshells are cats that have <strong>red colour<\/strong> mixed with one of the main colours. And depending on the main colour there is a different <strong>the letter designation<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>black<\/strong> tortoiseshell (f) and lighter <strong>blue<\/strong> tortoiseshell (g)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>chocolate<\/strong> tortoiseshell (h) and lighter <strong>lilac<\/strong> tortoiseshell (j)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cinnamon<\/strong> tortoiseshell (q) and lighter <strong>fawn<\/strong> tortoiseshell (r)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-5-1024x522.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-5-1024x522.png 1024w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-5-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-5-768x391.png 768w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-5-600x306.png 600w, https:\/\/kotkikedziorki.pl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-5.png 1386w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly <strong>tortoiseshells are only females<\/strong> (tortoiseshell toms have a genetic defect and are infertile).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example<\/strong>: <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/deli\/\">Deli<\/a> is <strong>DRX f 09<\/strong> (black tortoiseshell with white) and <a href=\"\/en\/kot\/didi\/\">Didi<\/a> is <strong>DRX h 09<\/strong> (a chocolate tortoiseshell with white). As you can see here there is a double combination &#8211; of tortoiseshell and \u201epatching\u201d (because both girls also had white as an additional colour).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see, it is quite <strong>a simple and intuitive way of describing colors<\/strong>. You just have to remember that Devon Rex cats can also occur in a mixture of these elements &#8211; e.g. patched tortoiseshells, tabby with white, etc. But we will not complicate this any further \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a beginner it is probably still <strong>a lot of information<\/strong>. So here you can finish reading. Unless, that is, you want to find out more &#8211; then you can move on to the ADVANCED part (below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, with the explanation above you already know the basic colour options of Devons and should be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>to determine the EMS color<\/strong> the cat when you see it* and <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>based on the DRX xxx notation to know <strong>what color it really is<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">*<strong>Fun fact<\/strong>: Determining a cat's colour with the EMS code isn't always so easy (especially in the first days\/weeks of a cat's life, and especially for point cats, which can change colour over time, even up to 2 years). It takes some experience, and even then it may not be done perfectly (we too are sometimes not 100% sure and occasionally ask fellow breeders for their opinion). Either way, the colour must be determined by the breeder when registering the cat for a pedigree (and entering the specific EMS code &#8211; it is also included in our contracts). After the fact, you can also go to a show, where there is a special category called &#8222;colour determination&#8221;, where the judges (specialists) can actually confirm the cat's colour from the pedigree. It may also happen that the judges change the official colour of the cat on the pedigree, because they decide the breeder may have made a mistake!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Devon colors for the ADVANCED<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want to find out much more about colours, their detailed designations and <strong>all the color variants<\/strong> &#8211; now here is a description for you. Note &#8211; it will be longer and more detailed and technical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an EMS code?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a system created by the International Feline Federation (FIFe) for the easy identification of pedigree cats. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EMS code is <strong>a combination of letters and numbers that describes the cat's external features<\/strong> and covers such elements as: breed, colour and its distribution on the body, eye colours, types of tail and ears. The full description is available <a href=\"http:\/\/fifeweb.org\/wp\/breeds\/breeds_ems.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the FIFe website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beginning of the code denotes the breed and is written in capital letters (<strong>the Devon Rex breed in EMS is the letters DRX<\/strong>), the further lower-case letters specify the dominant colour, and the numbers the patterns, varieties or distribution of the fur colours. To this is added <strong>&#8222;tortoiseshell color&#8221;<\/strong> (in 6 basic variants) and finally <strong>white color<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Onto this are then overlaid certain varieties, patterns or additions of white. We invite you to get acquainted with the details of this classification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: It happens that the cat's final coloring may change <strong>up to even the 2nd year of life<\/strong>. This is especially visible in \u201cpoint\u201d cats, but other initial colours can also change slightly. Because of this, and interestingly, white cats (not albinos) can have coloured kittens. There's a very high chance that white cats will have different-coloured eyes (the technical name is heterochromia).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note 2: There are also often kittens that look almost \u201ewhite\u201d (the vast majority of their body is white) with a distinct colour on the nose, paws, ears and tail. But then their colour officially is NOT white, but indicates the base colour (above) plus an addition called \u201epoint\u201d (described below).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">x(s\/y) &#8211; Additional coat colorings (silver and gold)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cats each <strong>the hair is only partially colored<\/strong> (in the upper part of the hair, the base colour), and in the lower part there is <strong>devoid of pigment<\/strong> &#8211; and it can look white (Silver) or yellowish (Golden). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To distinguish such a colouring, to the letter denoting the base colour <strong>we add <\/strong>one of two distinguishing features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>s \u2013 silver, smoke \/ silver, smoke<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>y \u2013 golden, golden smoke \/ golden, golden smoke<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the suffix s or y occurs <strong>always with a base color<\/strong>, because it always occurs at the tip of the hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Note: We often call such cats smoke, however it is a bit more complicated, because the coloured section of the hair can vary and the above designate the s\/y colour for us if <strong>the hair is colored in more than 50%\/half<\/strong>. And this colour is located <strong>on the paws, nose, ears and tail<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exactly the <strong>contrast <\/strong>between the whole body and certain specific points, which we call point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Point color varieties:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>31 \u2013 Burmese (sepia \/ solid) &#8211; the smallest contrast between the base colour (almost solid)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>32 \u2013 Tonkinese (mink \/ hybrid) &#8211; medium contrast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>33 \u2013 Siamese (point \/ himalayan) &#8211; maximum contrast (a distinct point)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Fun fact: Kittens are usually born very light, but with age the cat will become darker and darker in these \u201epoint\u201d areas (in the vast majority of cases). During the first weeks of life (similarly to people) their eyes are <strong>blue or blue-grey<\/strong> (it is the result of a lack of pigment, melanin, in the irises). Then around the 5th-6th week (as a result of the accumulation of melanin) the colour becomes more intense.
